ظل هذا العنوان (الحس القصصى فى أشعار الهذليين) يطاردنى لسنوات عديدة, وأصرف الذهن عنه, ويلج فى المطاردة كلما قرأت شعرا للهذليين, يرثى فيه الشاعر, أو يبكى أو يتغزل فى محبوبته, أو يشكو الهجر ويبث الشرق, أو يبكى غائبا, ومع ذلك, ومع خصوصية هذه الموضوعات, ويعرج الشاعر على قصة من القصص لحمار أو ثور أو إنسان, أو شابه ذلك, يعطى له سمات معينة من العزة والمنعة أو التخبط والضياع, يقاوم عدوا له سمات معينة أيضا, وتطول هذه المقاومة لتنتهى الحياة كما يريدها الشاعر, أو كما يريدها الموضوع الذى يتناوله.
ومن هنا أقبلت على الموضوع بعد أن تراكمت عندى عدة ظواهر تستحق الدراسة, وكنت أحسب أن القصة الشعرية غير موجودة, أو أننى سألقى كثيرا من العنت والمشقة حتى أرسم صورة للقصة الشعرية عند الهذليين.
ومن هنا كانت دراستى لأشعار الهذليين, محاولا تلمس القصة ووجودها فى أشعارهم, وتجلية العناصر القصصية فيها, وقد بدأت بما بدأ به ديوان الهذليين, بدأت بأشعر شعراء هذيل غير مدافع-بدأت بأبى ذؤيب الهذلى.
