بالقرب من القرية كانت تقطن سيدة من صغار الملاك تملك ضيعة تقرب من ثلاثمئة فدان، وقد ظلت علاقاتها بالفلاحين طيبة حتى اتخذت أحد الجنود القدماء وكيلا لها فأرهق الناس بالغرامات، ومهما اشتد حرص باخوم فإن الأمر لم يكن يخلو من أن يدخل حصانة حقل الشوفان أو تهبط بقرته إلى الحديقة، وكان عليه دائما أن يدفع الغرامة. كان يدفع ولكنه كان يعود إلى منزله ساخطاً غاضبا فيخاشن أهله، وقد ظل الصيف الأخير كله في اضطراب بسبب ذلك الوكيل ... وتنفس الصعداء حين حل الشتاء وبقيت الماشية في حظائرها لا تبارحها، ومع أن ثمن العلف كان يؤوده حين كان يمتنع على الماشية الرعي في البراري إلا أنه كان يستريح من القلق بشانها، وسرت الأنباء في الشتاء بأن السيدة تنوي أن تبيع أرضها، وأن صاحب الفندق يساومها في أمرها، فلما سمع الفلاحون ذلك اشتد فزعهم وقالوا : - لئن وقعت الأرض في يد هذا لرجل فلسوف يرهقنا أكثر مما يفعل الوكيل، ونحن جميعا نعتمد على هذه الضيعة. وحزموا أمرهم على أن يطلبوا من السيدة باسم المجلس القروي ألا تبيع أرضها لصاحب الفندق، وعرضوا عليها ثمنا أكبر مما عرض فوافقت، وبقي أن يقنعوا المجلس بشرائها على أن يساهموا فيها تصبح ملكهم جميعا، واجتمعوا لذلك مرتين ولكنهم لم ينتهوا إلى قرار، إذ نزغ الشيطان بينهم فلم تجتمع كلمتهم، فقرروا أن يشتروا الأرض آحادا، كل على قدر استطاعته، ووافقت السيدة على هذا العرض، كما وافقت على العرض الآخر من قبل . وسمع باخوم أن أحد جيرانه شرع في شراء خمسين فدانا وأن السيدة رضيت أن تقبض نصف الثمن في الحال على أن تؤجل النصف الثاني إلى العام المقبل، فأحس بالغيرة وقال لنفسه : " افتح عينيك وانظر! إن الأرض ستباع كلها دون أن يكون لها منها نصيب " ثم راح يحدث زوجته : " الناس غيرنا يشترون ويجب أن نشتري نحن عشرين فدانا أو نحو ذلك، إن الحياة أصبحت مستحيلة، وهذا الوكيل سيحطم حياتنا بغراماته ".
