بين عام (363- 449هـ) عاش الأديب الفيلسوف أبو العلاء أحمد بن عبد الله بن سليمان المعري في حاضرة من بلاد الشام تدعى معرة النعمان فيها ولد، وترعرع، ونشأ معاصراً مرحلة سياسية مضطربة، شهد فيها صرح الدولة العباسية الكبير وهو ينهار في مأساة تاريخية أريقت فيها دماء، وأتهم فيها أبرياء، بل عاصر مرحلة مضطربة في كل نواحيها.
ومهمة البحث أن يتناول فكره، وأدبه الساخر، إذ لا يأتي الأخير إلاّ بالأول لأن السخرية نشاط عقلي يقوم على الفكر، وربما أكون قد تجاوزت - إلى حد ما - نطاق القضية التي يدور البحث في رحاها، ولكني أعتقد أن هذا الخروج، أو تجاوز النطاق كان ضرورياً في أبي العلاء بالذات، لأن صورة المعرى، وبحثه لا يكتملان - أياً كان موضوع تناوله - إلا بشيء من الشمول نعرف فيه بواعث نقده، وغايات سخريته، لأنهما - عند الفلاسفة - لا يتحققان إلاّ بمثل هذا، فسخريتهم أدب (عقلي) ومنهج تقويمي، وليس هجاء تقليدياً قائماً على الطعن والتشهير، أو الحنق والموجودة كما هو عند معظم الشعراء.
