كان القرن التاسع عشر في الأدب الغربي حيوياً وممتعاً عبر مختلف الفنون الأدبية. فقد نشأت أدبية حديثة كالرومنسية والواقعية والرمزية وغيرها. وامتدت تأثيرات هذه المدارس الأدبية إلى القرن العشرين، وحتى القرن الحادي والعشرين.
من ناحية أخرى، انطلقت فيه مظاهر اجتماعية واقتصادية وفلسفية كان لها تأثيرها أيضاً، وأهمها الاشتراكية، والهيغيلية والشيوعية التي ساهمت في إنماء الأفكار الديمقراطية من جهة، إضافة إلى الرأسمالية التي شجع على انتشارها النمو المطرد للصناعة والتجارة، فكانت الثورة الصناعية التي أدت إلى حالات من الفقر والبؤس والاستغلال في كل الأقطار الأوروبية والأميركية. فتحول المجتمع إلى طبقتين فقط الأغنياء والفقراء.
وما رواية "بائعة الخبز" هذه سوى صورة صادقة عن حالة هذا المجتمع المتنامي، فتناول الكاتب فيها تصوير المشاكل الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والقانونية بشكل يدعو إلى طرح كل قضية منها على بساط البحث، من جديد. إضافة إلى إظهار أثر الظلم والفقر الذي يتعرض له السواد الأعظم من الناس.
لا تخلو الرواية من الإيمان والرجاء والمحبة إنما عند الفقراء والمظلومين، فنجد إلى جانبهم الجلادين والسفاكين، إنما في النهاية ينتصر المظلوم على الظالم والمجرم يعاقب باسم القانون...
"بائعة الخبز" قصة ممتعة ومثيرة، كتبها كزافيه دو مونتيان بإثارة، وشوق لمتابعة الأحداث، إضافة إلى سرد هذه الأحداث مع وصف مطول للواقع، للطبيعة للحالات النفسية والانفعالية... مما أدى إلى إطالة النصوص فالقصة هي من خمسة أجزاء أصلاً، لكن المترجم "موريس شربل" اهتم بإيجازها جداً مع الحفاظ على كل الأحداث الواردة في المجلدات الخمسة، فيتيح بذلك للقارئ إمكانية التمتع بقراءتها بوقت قصير...
