بائعة الخبز رواية شهيرة للفرنسيّ كزافييه دو مونتبان، صدرت عام 1889، تحكي مأساة الأرملة جان فورتيه، الّتي توفّي زوجها في حادث في المصنع الّذي يعمل فيهن وترك لها طفلين صغيرين: (جورج ولوسي)، فعملت في المصنع نفسه لتنفق على نفسها وطفليها، وهناك حاول أحد موظفي المصنع (جاك جاورد) إغواءها، ثم حاول الزواج منها، لكنّها رفضت فدبّر لها مكيدةً وأوقعها في حبال الشرطة، وفرّ هو هارباً بعد أن سرق من المصنع أموالاً وتصميمات لآلة جديدة كان صاحب المصنع يشتغل عليها.
تركت جان ولدها عند أخت الكاهن، ولم تعد تعرف شيئاً عن ابنتها، وحُكم عليها بالسجن المؤبد.
دار الزمن، فأثرى جاك جاورد ثراءً فاحشاً، فيما عانى الأطفال (ابنا جان، وابن صاحب المصنع) حتّى كبروا، ثمّ دارت الدنيا، وحدثت مفاجآت، لكنّ النهاية تجمع جان بولديها، ويفجع جاك جاورد بموت ابنه، ويعترف بالجرائم الّتي ارتكبها.
إنّها رواية تبيّن قسوة ظلم الإنسان لأخيه الإنسان، وقد ترجمت إلى لغات عديدة من بينها العربيّة، حيث تتوفّر منها أربع ترجمات عربيّة، لكنّها تحتاج إلى ترجمة جديدة كاملة تتخلّص من مثالب الترجمات السابقة.
