Book Description
تحكي مأساة الأرملة (جان فورتيه) التي توفي زوجها في حادث في المصنع الذي يعمل فيه، وترك لها صبيا صغيرا وطفلة رضيعة (جورج ولوسي) فعملت في المصنع نفسه لتنفق على نفسها وطفليها، وهناك حاول أحد موظفي المصنع وهو جاك جاورد إغواءها، ثم حاول الزواج منها، لكنها رفضت، فدبر لها مكيدة، وأوقعها في حبال الشرطة، وفر هو هاربا بما سرقه من أموال وتصميمات آلة جديدة كان يعمل فيها صاحب المصنع.
تترك جان ولدها عند أخت الكاهن، ولا تعرف شيئا عن طفلتها، ويحكم عليها بالسجن المؤبد، ويدور الزمن بجاك جيرود فيثري ثراء فاحشا بأساليبه الاستغلالية، فيما يعاني الأطفال (ابنا جان وابن صاحب المصنع) حتى يكبروا، تدور الدنيا وتحدث مفاجآت، لكن النهاية تجمع جان بولديها، ويذوق جاك جاورد جزاء أعماله بوفاة ابنه، وتوقيعه على اعتراف بجرائمه.
