سيد جارود.. هلا أذنت لي بنصف ساعة وأعدك ألا أتأخر.
للأسف لا أستطيع مخالفة التعليمات.
ولكن.. أنت ترى بنفسك.. وأعتقد أن السيد لابرو...
السيد لابرو ليس متواجدًا الآن.. ولا يمكن لأحد أن ينصرف بدون إذنه.. إلا إذا أراد أن ينصرف ولا يعود.
فراح العجوز ينظر له بتوسل، ولكن جارود تركه وانصرف، وراح الأول يجمح في خياله ويتخيل زوجته وهي تلفظ آخر أنفاسها، وامتزج خوفه بالحنق فترك ما في يده وتوجه إلى الباب وهو يتميز غيظًا، وهناك وجد جان جالسة فاستأذنها في الخروج فسألته:
هل معك تصريح؟
فشرح لها الوضع، فتعاطفت معه وقالت بأسف:
ولكني لا أستطيع.
سأعود سريعًا دون أن يعلم.
خذ إذن المراقب، السيد جارود.
لقد رفض.
ليس أمامك إذًا إلا أن تنتظر.
فراح يتوسل لها، وباتت في حيرة من أمرها إلى أن فتحت له الباب أخيرًا مع علمها المسبق بما سيعود عليها هذا من متاعب.
وبعد قليل أقبل عليها جارود غاضبًا وسألها عن العجوز.
تركته يخرج.. زوجته مريضة وقد...
أي خطأ قد ارتكبت يا جان؟! السيد لابرو لن يغفر لك، كما أني سأطرد فانسان.
