"امتثل جاك مكرهاً، وأملى عليه المصور ما يأتي: أنا الموقع أدناه، جاك جيرود، اعترف بحضور إتيان كاستل، وراوول دشمان.. فتوقف جاك عن الكتابة قائلاً: ولكنك تسألني أن أقر بجريمتي وأعترف بذنوبي، وذلك يثلم شرف ابنتي فلا أفعل. فمشت ماري إليه مشياً بطيئاً، وقد كهربتها هذه الحادثة فبانت شبه النائم نوماً مغنطيسياً وقالت: بل اكتب يا أبي؟ فركع أبوها أمامها وسالت الدموع من عينيه وقال: إنهم يريدون ثلم شرفك يا ابنتي. وعاد المصور إلى الإملاء فكتب جاك ما يأتي: "اعترف أني في سبتمبر سنة 1861 كتبت إلى جنه فورتيه هذا الكتاب الموقع باسمي والموجود في طبه. وأعترف أيضاً أني سرقت في تلك الليلة مئتي ألف فرنك من صندوق جيل لابرد وسرقت اختراعه وقتلته وحرقت معمله. وعند ذلك سقط القلم من يد جاك لارتجافها".
"بائعة الخبز" رائعة "كزافيه دو مونتابين" تأخذ طريقها على هذه الصفحات مترجمة عن النص الأصلي، وهي تسرد قصة المرأة حنة التي رفضت الزواج من "جاك" فكان مصيرها الشقاء والتعاسة مع ولديها الصغيرين اللذان كتب لهما العيش بعيداً عن أمهما وفي أحضان عائلات مختلفة، ولكن تشاء الأقدار أن يلتقي الثلاثة لينكشف المخفي وتظهر براءة الأم على يد ابنها المحامي الذي كان في صغره السبب في إخفاء براءة أمه. "بائعة الخبز" رواية عظيمة تعكس مدى إنسانية "مونتابين" وبُعد نظره، إنها ذروة أعماله الأدبية.
