لبنان في الثمانينات من القرن العشرين والصراع المذهبي في أوجه، يلتقي الطبيب الراوي في أحد ملاجئ بيروت بالخواجا، وهو رجلُ مسنٌ لا مثيل له هحَر من دارته، وقد حمله تعلقه الشديد ببيته على القيام بكل ما في وسعه ليعود إليه ويستعيده. فتنشأ صداقة بين الرجلين تحمل الوجيه على رواية قصته الفريدة والإفصاح عن المهمة المقدسة التي أوكلها إليه القدر، فكانت له الحرب بالمرصاد. تدخلنا رواية الخواجا هذه، بإيجاز ورشاقة مستلهمين من روح قصص الشرق، عمق بلادٍ يرتسم فيها المستقبل عبر الماضي، بلاد يتجاوز فيها مسيحيون ومسلمون ودروز من مسالمين ودعاة حرب، ويتآلفون ويتجابهون وهم يتداولون تباعاً أدوار الضحية وجلاد في حرب عبثية تافهة لا مبرر لها. إنها رواية العيش المشترك بلا منازع.
والجدير بالذكر أن هذه الرواية قد حازت على جائزة MEDCO الفرنسية، وستحوَل قريباً إلى فيلم سينمائي. كما إن هذه الرواية معتمدة في جميع الصفوف الثانوية للمدارس الكاثوليكية في لبنان.
