«وأنني رغْمَ هذا كلِّهِ لمْ أكفَّ عنْ حُبِّها ولنْ أَكُف، وأني قطعًا وبالتأكيدِ هالِك، وقدْ بدأتُ أتناولُ الحبوبَ المهدِّئةَ وأنامُ بالمنوِّماتِ وأستيقظُ بالمُنبِّهات، وعقلي كلُّهُ أراهُ رأْيَ العَينِ ينفصلُ شيئًا فشيئًا عنْ واقعِ الحياة، ويتصاعدُ مُتصوِّفًا في عبادتِها، وكأنها تجرَّدتْ هي الأُخرى ووصلتْ إلى معنَى الله.»
الاعترافُ طَقسٌ سحريٌّ يمارسهُ مَن يشعرُ بالذنْب، طامعًا في الغفران، غيرَ أنَّ «يحيى» الذي قرَّرَ يوسف إدريس أنْ يجعلَهُ يعترفُ لقرَّاءِ روايتِه، لم يطلبِ الصَّفحَ مِن قرَّائِه، بل أرادَ أنْ يشاركَهم قصَّةَ التناقضِ الذي يكادُ يمزِّقُ عقلَهُ وقلبَه؛ إذْ يتشكَّلُ الصِّراعُ بينَ أُصولِهِ الرِّيفيَّةِ وحياتِهِ المدنيَّة، بينَ ضغوطِ الحياةِ وزحامِها في حيٍّ شعبي ورفاهيةِ الحيِّ الأرستقراطي، بينَ انتمائِه إلى الفكرِ اليساريِّ وانتقادهِ له. يَحملُ «يحيى» في نفْسِه كلَّ المُتناقِضات، غيرَ أنَّ التناقضَ الأكبرَ هو قصَّةُ حبِّهِ لهذهِ المرأةِ اليونانيةِ البيضاءِ «سانتي»؛ فعلى الرَّغمِ مِن تطرُّفِ «يحيى» في حبِّها حتى أصبحَ مًتصوِّفًا في عبادتِها، فإنَّها لم تُبادِلْه يومًا الحب، وإنْ حرَصتْ على وصلِهِ دومًا؛ فالعلاقةُ بينَهما مُعقَّدةٌ إلى أبعدِ حد، فهلْ ينجحُ «يحيى» في إنهاءِ التردُّدِ المُسيطِرِ على حياتِه؟
