روائي تركي فاز بجائزة نوبل للأداب، لعام 2006.
من مواليد إسطنبول في 7 يونيو عام 1952 وهو ينتمي لأسرة تركية مثقفة.
درس العمارة والصحافة قبل أن يتجه الي الأدب والكتابة كما يعد أحد أهم الكتاب المعاصرين في تركيا وترجمت اعماله الي 34 لغة حتي الآن، ويقرأه الناس في أكثر من 100 دولة.
في فبراير 2003 صرح باموق لمجلة سويسرية بأن "مليون أرمني و30 ألف كردي قتلوا على هذه الأرض، لكن لا أحد غيري يجرؤ على قول ذلك".
تمت ملاحقته قضائيا أمام القضاء التركي بسبب "إهانة الهوية التركية"،ولشخصية شبه مقدسة عند الأتراك وهي شخصية (مصطفى كمال أتاتورك) وهما جريمتين يعاقب عليهما القانون بحسب الفقرة 301, وقد عفى من الملاحقة القضائية أخيرا في نهاية 2006.
اختير كعضو في لجنة تحكيم مهرجان كان السينمائي لعام 2007.
Book Description
كنا مبحرين من البندقية إلى نابولي، عندما اعترضتنا السفن التركية، لم تكن سفننا إلا ثلاثاً، أما هم فلا تناهى بأي شكل سواري سفنهم وسط الضباب.
فجأة دب ذعر وطيش في سفيتنا، بدأ المجذفون - وأكثرهم أتراك ومغاربة - بإطلاق صيحات الفرح، وهذا ما وتّر أعصابنا، أداروا مقدمة سفيتنا نحو البر - إلى الغرب - كما فعلت السفينتان الأخريان، ولكننا لم نكن مسرعين مثلهما. لم يستطع قبطاننا بأي شكل إصدار أمر بجلد عبيد التجذيف خشيةَ معاقبتهِ إذا وقع في الأسر، اعتقدت أن حياتي كلها تغيرت بعد ذلك بسبب جبن ذلك القبطان.
أما الآن فأعتقد أن حياتي كلها ستتغير حقيقةً لولا جبن قبطاننا في الفترة القصيرة تلك، يعرف كثيرون أنه ليس ثمة حياة يُخطط لها مسبقاً، وأن الحكايات كلها عبارة عن مجموعة من المصادفات المتسلسلة، ولكن رغم هذا فإن الذين يعرفون هذه الحقيقة عندما يلتفتون إلى الوراء في فترة معينة من فترات حياتهم، وينظرون، يقررون أن ما عاشوه مصادفة هو في الحقيقة إضطرار.
أنا أيضاً مررت بفترة كهذه، أعتقد أن هذا هو الوقت الأنسب - في فترة كهذه - للتفكير بلون السفن التركية التي ظهرت وسط الضباب كأشباح، وأما أعمل على كتابة حكايتي هذه على طاولة قديمة.
