إنّنا بتقصينا للأمثال وتبويبها و شرحها وتحليلها نلتمس الأجر والفائدة، فالمثل هو تكثيف لتجربة إنسانيّة عميقة، وخير وصف له قول إبراهيم النظّام: يجتمع في المثل أربعة لا تجتمع في غيره من الكلام: إيجاز في اللفظ، و إصابة في المعنى، وحُسن التشبيه، وجودة الكناية، فهو نهاية البلاغة.
سئل أعرابيّ: ما هي الحكمة؟ فقال: شيء ينبت في قلوبنا، ويثمر في ألسنتنا. وسئل ما هو المثل؟ فقال: شيء يأتينا فنحسه فنقوله ونعيده في كلّ مقتضى.
والأمثال ليست حكراً على لغة أو أمّة بعينها، بل تتساوى فيها جميع الأمم، ولقد اعتنى العرب في جاهليّتهم بالبيان، فامتازوا بكونهم أصحاب بلاغة وخطابة و شعر وبيان، تأسرهم الكلمة البليغة، فاحتفوا بالأمثال،
وضمّنوها خطبهم ومقالاتهم و أشعارهم، فنزل إليهم القر آن الكريم المعجز، وقد ضرب الله سبحانه وتعالى العديد من الأمثال، وردت مبثوثة في تضاعيف السور المجيدة لتجسد للناس الصور، وتقرّب إلى أذهانهم الأفكار النظريّة بمشاهد محسوسة ومرئيّة ليتم استيعابها، كما اشتملت الأحاديث النبويّة الشريفة على الكثير من الأمثال، وصنّف المصنّفون كتباً عديدة في الأمثال العربيّة الفصيحة.
