إن الأمثال بصفة عامة سواء كانت منحدرة من أصول كتابية إسلامية أو عربية أو شعبية أو عامة أو مطلقة فهي تكون موسوعة كبيرة تعرفنا أحوال العرب في جاهليتهم وإسلامهم. ومن حيث هي موسوعة. فهي مرآة تعكس أحوال الناس بجميع نواحيها، الذهنية والثقافية والحضارية والإقتصادية إلى غير ذلك فهي تعبر عن الحقائق المألوفة والأعراف السائدة، الأمر الذي يوحي بأن الدراسة الثقافية والحضارية للمثل أكثر أهمية من الدراسة الأدبية: لما تلعبه من دور في توجيه السلوك الإجتماعي، فهي إلى كونها حصيلة تجارب الشعوب على مدار الدهور تعكس حقيقة المنجزات الثقافية لتلك الشعوب. فالأساس من وراء دراسة هذا النوع من الأجناس الأدبية هو الشعب والناس الكامنون وراء أشكال التعبير ومدى الدور الإيجابي أو السلبي الذي تلعبه تلك الأمثال في حياة هؤلاء الناس.
في هذا المجال يضم هذا الكتاب دراسة نقدية لفاعلية الأمثال الشعبية الليبية في ضوء منهج التحليل الفاعلي، جاءت في خمسة فصول وفق ما يلي:
