الأمثال سلسلة طويلة من تراكم خبرات وتجارب الأجداد توارثها الخلف عن السلف، لسهولة حفظ المثل وقلة مفرداته، والمثل يمتاز بعمق المعنى ورصانة الكلمات واستعماله قد يغني عن الشرح أو الإفاضة في الموضوع مجال الحديث، والإهتمام بجميع الأمثال وتبويبها وترتيبها حسب الحروف الهجائية ليس جديداً عند كل الشعوب، وبمختلف اللغات واللهجات، فقد وصلتنا حكم وأمثال نسبت إلى الشعوب القديمة، أمثال الفراعنة والرومان والإغريق والفرس، ومنا ما ينس إلى أفلاطون وسليمان الحكيم ولقمان، وتضم هذه المجموعة كل من الأمثال الشعبية والحكم والتعابير الشعبية، وقد تم ترتيب الأمثال هجائياً، والطريقة المتبعة هي طريقة كلمة كلمة وليس حرفاً حرفاً، أي أن كل الأمثال ترتب حرفاً حرفاً حتى نهاية كل كلمة من كلمات المثل، ولا ندعي أننا ألممنا بكل الأمثال والتعابير والحكم الشعبية؛ فرقعة بلادنا الليبية كبيرة مترامية الأطراف تضم مدناً وقرى ساحلية وجبلية وصحراوية وواحات كل لها تراثها الجميل المتميز وحكمه وتعابيره الخاصة والمتصل بطبيعة البيئة واللهجة المستخدمة فيها، ويصعب علينا الإحاطة بجميع هذه الأمثال، ولكننا على يقين إننا جمعنا عدداً كبيراً منها لم يجمع من قبل في عمل واحد.
