تنطلق الرواية من حادثة عابرة لتطرح أسئلة وجودية حول أثر النظرات العابرة واللغة الصامتة في زعزعة الاستقرار، موظفة تقنية "الرواية داخل الرواية" في بناء سردي متشابك بين الواقع والخيال. تدور الأحداث حول رجل أربعيني ناجح ظاهرياً، يواجه اضطراباً داخلياً يُعرف بـ"متلازمة تنامي شعور الفقد"، يدخل معه في تواصل روحي صامت مع زميلته العزباء، ليكشف السرد المتبادل بينهما – ومع تحليل طبيبته النفسية – عالماً داخلياً عميقاً من الصراع بين الواجب والرغبة.
