يتتاول التعرف على كيميائية طبيعة وتركيب المواد الأثرية المختلفة، وكيفية تكوّنها، وفهم كيمائية تلف هذه المواد، والسلوك الكيميائي لعوامل وأسباب التلف، وميكانيكية هذا التلف، والمظاهر الناتجة عنه، وكذلك فهم الطبيعة الكيميائية لمواد العلاج والترميم والصيانة، مثل: مواد التنظيف، واللواصق، والمقويات، والأغطية الواقية، وموانع الصدأ، ودورها في تحقيق العلاج والوقاية. والإلمام بالطبيعة الكيميائية لمواد الحفظ والتغليف على المواد الأثرية وتأثيرها في بيئة الحفظ والتخزين، وعند النقل. هذا بالإضافة إلى إدراك اجراءات السلامة والأمان في التعامل مع المواد الكيميائية، سواء عند نقلها، أو تناولها واستعمالها، أو تخزينها، وكيفية التخلص الآمن من مخلفاتها، والسلامة والوقاية من أضرارها الصحية.
