تتعرض الآثار المعدنية للعديد من عوامل التلف التي تسبب تآكلها وصدأها، وقد تسبب ضياعها، الأمر الذي يستلزم ترميمها، وعلاجها، وصيانتها. ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم دراسة وافية للمعادن الأثرية وكيفية ترميمها وصيانتها، حيث يتناول في بدايته طبيعة المعادن وأقسامها المختلفة من فلزات خالصة أو خامات، وخواصها المختلفة الفيزيائية والكيميائية، وكيفية استخلاصها من خاماتها، وتقنيات تشكيلها وزخرفتها، وخاصة في العصور القديمة. كما يتناول الكتاب الظروف والعوامل التي تتسبب في تعرض هذه الآثار للتآكل والصدأ، وطبيعة هذا التآكل وأشكاله. ويتفرد الكتاب بعد ذلك بدراسة الفلزات التي شاع استخدامها قديماً، ومنها: الذهب، والفضة، والنحاس، والحديد، والقصدير، والرصاص، والسبائك المعدنية المصنوعة منها، وذلك من خلال دراسة طبيعتها، وخواصها، وطرق تصنيعها، وميكانيكية تعرضها للصدأ والتآكل، وكيفية ترميمها وعلاجها وصيانتها. ويُختتم الكتاب بدراسة الظروف المتلفة للآثار المعدنية في المتاحف والمخازن، وكيفية صيانتها ووقايتها من التأثيرات المستقبلية، وذلك في إطار ما يعرف بالصيانة الوقائية للآثار المعدنية.
