تفاوتت مسيرة العلاقات السياسية بين المملكة العربية السعودية وإيران منذ نشأتها بمداها التاريخي ما بين التقارب والتباعد، ولربما تُعّد مراحل التقارب التي كانت تشهدها العلاقات السعودية- الإيرانية ذات فائدة كبيرة على العالمين العربي والإسلامي، من خلال مواقف البلدين في مواجهة المد الشيوعي في المنطقة، إلا أن سقوط نظام الشاه محمد رضا بهلوي الذي انتهى بثورة الشعب الإيراني، وتأسيس جمهورية إيران الإسلامية عام1979، أدى إلى برود في العلاقات السعودية- الإيرانية، بالرغم من أن المملكة كانت من أوائل الدول التي سارعت في الاعتراف بالنظام الجديد في إيران، وأبدت رغبتها في التعاون معه، ويعود ذلك السبب نتيجة انتهاج الحكومة الإيرانية الجديدة سياسة استفزازية، وتحديداً نحو دول الخليج العربية المجاورة لها من خلال محاولة تصدير أفكار الثورة الإيرانية إلى تلك الدول. ومن خلال ما تقدم، فإن أهمية هذه الدراسة في منهجها التاريخي، تُكمن في محاولة تفسير التطور والتغير الذي طرأ على مسار العلاقات السعودية-الإيرانية ما بعد عام1979، إذ تحلل الدراسة التغيرات التي حصلت في النظام الإقليمي نتيجة تداعيات الحروب والأحداث التي شهدتها المنطقة فيما بعد، والتي انعكست على العلاقات بين الدولتين، وكذلك التغيرات التي طرأت على النظام الدولي لاسيما بعد انتهاء الحرب الباردة نتيجة تفكك الاتحاد السوفييتي .
