إن المملكة العربية السعودية وإيران دولتان من كبريات دول الشرق الأوسط، وقد كان لهما دور بالغ الأهمية في الحياة السياسية والاقتصادية والعسكرية لدول المنطقة. ولقد توالت الأحداث والعلاقات الدولية لتعزز من أهمية هذا الدور سواء قبل الحرب العالمية الثانية أم بعدها. وهذا الكتاب يعنى بالعلاقة الثنائية بين المملكة العربية السعودية وإيران خلال فترة نصف قرن من عام 1932م وحتى عام 1982م.
ففي عام 1932م أعلن قيام المملكة العربية السعودية دولة موحدة ذات سيادة، ونظراً لأن سلالة آل بهلوي قد وصلت إلى سدة الحكم في إيران قبل هذا التاريخ بنحو سبعة أعوام أي في عام 1925م فإن هذا الكتاب يحتوي فصلاً كاملاً يعرض العلاقات بين البلدين فيما قبل عام 1932م باعتبار ذلك خلفية تاريخية ضرورية للفترة الزمنية التي يبحثها الكتاب.
هذا الكتاب صورة مفصلة عن العلاقات بين دولتين خليجيتين كبيرتين، على امتداد نصف قرن حاسم. والكاتب يستعرض حركات المد والجزر في هذه العلاقات على الأصعدة السياسية والدينية والاقتصادية والعسكرية.
فبعد مقدمة ترجع إلى البدايات في أواسط العشرينات، مع محاولات رضا شاه عبد العزيز في توطيد سلطتيهما، ينتقل الكتاب إلى تحليل نظامي البلدين، ثم يتعدى ذلك إلى النفط وسياساته، والتباين المذهبي السني-الشيعي، وأثر ذلك كله على القرارات العليا. وفي موازاة ذلك يتم رصد المسار العسكري منذ علاقة عبد العزيز بالإخوان، مروراً بالنزاع على البحرين، وانتهاءً بصيغ التعاون الخليجي.
