مرت منطقة الخليج العربي خلال المدة من 1932 إلى 1980 بتطورات وأزمات كبيرة تركت بصماتها على الأوضاع العامة في المنطقة بشكل مباشر، وأفرزت توازنات تغيرت مع تغيير هذه التطورات. فكانت العلاقات السياسية (الإيرانية- السعودية) من أبرز هذه التطورات التي بدأت بالتقارب بين البلدين.
يرتكز هذا الكتاب على دراسة الجانب السياسي من العلاقات الإيرانية- السعودية للفترة (1932- 1988) إذ شكل عام 1932 بداية العلاقات الرسمية بين البلدين بتوقيعهما معاهدة الصداقة والإعتراف المتبادل، فضلاً عن أنه، العام الذي شهد إتمام قيام المملكة العربية السعودية، بينما شكل عام 1988 مرحلة تاريخية في العلاقات بين البلدين، بإعلانهما قطع العلاقات نتيجة لتأزمها بسبب آثار الحرب العراقية الإيرانية التي إنتهت في ذلك العام أيضاً.
توزع الكتاب على مقدمة وأربع فصول وخاتمة، بحث الفصل الأول الجذور التاريخية للعلاقات السعودية –الإيرانية حتى عام 1932.. أما الفصل الثاني فدرس طبيعة العلاقات السياسية الإيرانية –السعودية حتى العام 1964.. وتناول الفصل الثالث (مرحلة التعاون والتنافس الإقليمي) للفترة 1964-1979.. وتتبع الفصل الرابع العلاقات السياسية الإيرانية – السعودية في ظل قيام الثورة الإسلامية الإيرانية وتطورت الحرب العراقية الإيرانية.. أما الخاتمة فقد إنصبت لبيان أبرز ما توصلت إليه دراسة المؤلف للعلاقات السياسية بين السعودية وإيران وما تمخض عنها من نتائج.
