حظيت دراسة تاريخ العلاقات التركية – الإيرانية بأهمية كبيرة ، بسبب الثقل الكبير الذي تمثله الدولتان ، من خلال موقعهما الإستراتيجي ، ومقوماتهما السكانية ، وقدرتهما العسكرية ، فضلاً عن تأثيرهما السياسي في مجريات أحداث منطقة الشرق الأوسط ، مما جعل منهما إحدى محددات الحركة في النظام الإقليمي لهذه المنطقة ، كما أنها تظهر صورة واضحة للسياسة الخارجية ، لكل من تركيا وإيران والمؤثرات التي دفعت البلدين لتعزيز علاقتهما بعد سلسلة طويلة من الحروب والصراعات التي تميّزت بها علاقتهما طوال الرحلة التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الأولى ، إذ بدأت عوامل الإنفراج والتطور في مجرى العلاقات بين تركيا وإيران تتضح بعد انهيار الدولة العثمانية وقيام مصطفى أتاتورك بتأسيس الدولة التركية الحديثة عام 1923 ، ومجيء رضا شاه للحكم في إيران عام 1925 ، إذ مهّدت تلك الظروف والمعطيات الدولية لعهد جديد من الصداقة والتعاون بينهما ، والتي ارتكزت على المصالح المشتركة والمنافع المتبادلة التي وضعت تلك العلاقات فيما بعد ، في إطار التحالف الغربي ، مما عزّزها ودفعها باتجاه التنسيق والتعاون المشترك لتحقيق أهداف واستراتيجيات الدول العظمى .
ومن الجوانب الأخرى لأهمية دراسة هذه العلاقات ما انطوت عليه من مضامين وأبعاد معقدة ومتشابكة ، قلّ أن توجد في أية علاقات ثنائية أخرى . فعلى الرغم من ظهور الكثير من الخلافات بين تركيا وإيران ، كان مستوى ترابط المصالح بينهما يذلّل تلك العقبات بفعل التزام الطرفين تجاه بعضهما البعض ، أو بعبارة أخرى إن الأساس الصلب للمصالح الثنائية قد أثبت بأنه مقاوم للأزمات . وفي الوقت نفسه ، أظهر التعاون بين البلدين مرونة بحيث سمحت له بتذليل كل العقبات ومعالجة الخلافات جميعها التي ظهرت بينهما ، الأمر الذي أعطى لهذه العلاقات قوة وديمومة بشكل ملفت للنظر ، استحقت أن تأخذ تلك الأهمية بالدراسة والتمحيص والبحث لمعرفة حقيقة وأبعاد تلك العلاقات وتطوّرها .
