محمود طاهر حقي: أديبٌ ورِوائيٌّ مِصْري، يُعَدُّ أحدَ روَّادِ الروايةِ والقصَّةِ العربيةِ الحديثةِ في القرنِ العشرين، وهو عمُّ الأديبِ الشهيرِ «يحيى حقي».
وُلِدَ بمحافظةِ «دمياط» عامَ ١٨٨٤م، وكانَ والِدُه مديرًا لمصلحةٍ حكوميةٍ في قريةِ «المحمودية» بمحافظةِ البحيرة، وبعد وفاته عامَ ١٨٩٠م، أُصِيبَ أَدِيبُنا بمرضٍ شديدٍ فلم تشَأ له الأقدارُ أن يُتِمَّ تعليمَه في المدارس. بدأَ في كتابةِ القصَّةِ القصيرةِ وهو في السابعةَ عشرةَ من عُمرِه؛ حيث كتبَ في معظمِ الصحفِ والمجلاتِ المِصرية، ومنها: مجلةُ «الجوائب المصرية» لصاحبِها «خليل مطران»، وجريدةُ «المنبر» لصاحبَيْها «محمود مسعود» و«حافظ عوض»، كذلك كتبَ في «الأهرام» يوميًّا تحتَ عنوان: «هَمْسة في الأُذن»، فضلًا عن كتابتِه في جريدةِ «الاتحاد» يوميًّا تحتَ عنوان: «على الهامِش»، وإلى جانبِ هذا أنشأَ «الجريدة الأسبوعيَّة» التي كانَ يكتبُ فيها أميرُ الشعراءِ «أحمد شوقي».
شغلَ العديدَ مِنَ الوَظائف؛ فكانَ سكرتيرًا لمديرِ ديوانِ الأوقاف، وسكرتيرًا لمديرِ الأمنِ العامِّ بوزارةِ الداخلية، وسكرتيرًا لصاحبِ جريدةِ السياسة، كما كانَ سكرتيرًا بحزبِ الاتحاد، وأخيرًا شغلَ منصبَ سكرتيرٍ عامٍّ للفرقةِ القوميةِ المِصريةِ للمسرح.
روايةُ محمود حقي الأشهرُ هي «عَذْراء دنشواي» التي نشَرَ فصولَها عامَ ١٩٠٦م عقبَ حادثةِ دنشواي الشهيرة، التي أُعدِمَ فيها عددٌ من الفلاحينَ المِصريينَ إعدامًا جماعيًّا بتهمةِ قتلِ ضابطٍ إنجليزيٍّ أُصِيبَ بضربةِ شمسٍ أودَتْ بحياتِه، فأُرسلَتِ المَشانقُ إلى دنشواي من قبلِ أنْ تبدأَ المُحاكَمة، وهي الواقِعةُ التي فجَّرَتْ مَوْجةَ غضبٍ شعبيةً كبيرةً في مصرَ ضدَّ المحتلِّ الإنجليزي. وقد استلهمَ منها «محمود حقي» أحداثَ الروايةِ التي كانَت سببًا في شهرتِه وذيوعِ صيتِه بصفتِه روائيًّا متفاعِلًا مع واقعِه الاجتماعيِّ ومحبَّبًا إلى نفوسِ قرَّائِه على اختلافِ أذواقِهم ومستوياتِهم التعليميةِ والثقافية.
وله أيضًا مؤلَّفاتٌ أخرى، منها: روايةُ «الفَضِيلة»، والمجموعةُ القصصيةُ «غادياتٌ رائِحات»، ومسرحياتُ «النَّزوات»، و«الجامِحة»، و«بناتنا» وغيرُها.
تُوفِّيَ «محمود طاهر حقي» في يناير ١٩٦٥م (على الأَرْجح؛ إذْ تذكرُ بعضُ المصادرِ أنَّ وفاتَه كانَت عامَ ١٩٦٢م.)
