منذ بدايات العصور التاريخية، كانت كلمة «قبطي» تُطلَق على الإنسان المصري القديم، ولم يكُن هذا الاسم في ذلك الوقت يحمل في طيَّاته أيَّ دلالة دينية، ولكن عقب دخول العرب ﻟ «مصر» أثناء الفتح الإسلامي، أصبح لهذه الكلمة دلالةٌ أخرى، فصارت تُعبِّر عن معتنقي الديانة المسيحية تمييزًا لهم عن غيرهم. عن كل ذلك وأكثر، يحدثنا «توفيق عزوز» في هذا الكتاب، شارحًا لموجز تاريخ الأقباط في «مصر» منذ فجر التاريخ حتى العصر الحديث، فيعرفنا على أصلهم وسبب تسميتهم بهذا الاسم، ويتحدث عن بعض عاداتهم القديمة المشهورة، ودياناتهم ولغتهم، وأعظم ملوكهم وحُكامهم، مشيرًا إلى الصراع التاريخي الطويل الذي خاضه ملوك الأقباط لأجل الحفاظ على حُكمِهم للبلاد، هذا بالإضافة إلى الوقوف على أحوال الأقباط في العصر الحديث، فيذكر لنا أهم أعيادهم، وأشهَر مدارسهم وكنائسهم وجمعياتهم.
