هذا أول كتاب عن الأدب القبطي يحتوي على دراسة مركزة للأدب المتعلق بالشئون القبطية، والذي يصور حالة الأقباط النفسية، وحركاتهم الاجتماعية، وميولهم السياسية، واتجاهاتهم الفكرية، وخصوماتهم الطائفية، ونزعاتهم العاطفية، وأمانيهم الوطنية ، وفخرهم بالأمجاد الفرعونية.
ومن الغريب أن الأقباط المعاصرين يجهلون أدب أجدادهم جهلاً تاماً. ولا يكاد المتعلمون منهم يحفظون شيئاً من شعر شعرائهم. وكان لهذا الجحود الذي لاقاه أدباء الأقباط من أبناء طائفتهم أثره في نفوسهم، فأهملوا نتاجهم الأدبي حتى عبثت به يد النسيان أو كادت، فلم يهتموا بجمع شعرهم ونثرهم. وقد ترتب على هذه صعوبة كبرى تعترض سبيل الباحث في الأدب القبطي. وصعوبة أكبر من الوقوف على تراجم شعرائهم وكتابهم، وتواريخ ميلادهم ووفاتهم..
