فقد تولى الأقباط مهمات الصرف , ومهام جباية الأموال للولاة , وأيضا إدارة الدواوين , وظلت تلك الدواوين تدار باللغة القبطية , وكذلك تدوين الوثائق والكتب الحكومية بنفس اللغة حوالي نصف قرن , وعلى الرغم من أن المنفعة تستلزم التسامح , إلا أن الأقباط لم يسلموا دوما من الإضطهاد , بالرغم من الخدمات التي يؤدونها للولاة والحكومة و ومن حين لآخر سمع عن معاملة تنطوي على قسوة , وعن ألوان من التعذيب وتخريب الكنائس .
