تدُورُ أَحْداثُ هذِهِ الرِّوايةِ الحَزِينةِ حَولَ امْرأةٍ فرنسيَّةٍ تُدعَى «مادلين», أُصِيبَتْ بحَالةٍ مِنَ الجُنونِ والفاقَةِ لشِدةِ ما تَحمَّلَتْه مِن مَصائِبِ الدُّنْيا ووَيْلاتِها التي تَركَتْ آثارَها الواضِحةَ عَلى وَجهِها الجَمِيل. فقَدْ كانَتْ هذِهِ المَرأةُ تَعِيشُ في صِباها حَياةً تَملَؤُها السَّعادةُ والصَّفاءُ والحُب, إلَّا أنَّ القَدرَ لَم يَشَأْ أنْ تَستمِرَّ حياتُها عَلى هذِهِ الحَال, فسُرعانَ ما تَبدَّلَتْ إلى النَّقِيضِ بَعدَ أنْ تزوَّجَتْ رَغمًا عَنْها مِن رَجُلٍ غَنيٍّ قاسِي القَلْب, سَيِّئِ السُّلُوك, ورُزِقَتْ مِنه بوَلدَيْن, كانَ أَحدُهما يتَّسِمُ بحُسنِ الأَخْلاقِ وحَلاوَةِ الطِّباع, ويُشبِهُ كَثِيرًا الشَّخصَ الذي أَحَبَّتْه في صِباها, أمَّا الآخَرُ فكَانَ يُشبِهُ والِدَه. وعاشَتْ «مادلين» معَ زَوجِها لسِنِينَ عِدَّةٍ لاقَتْ فِيها أَنْواعَ الظُّلمِ والهَوَان, وصَبرَتْ عَلَيها, غَيرَ أنَّ حَدَثًا هائِلًا كانَ بمَثابةِ القَشَّةِ التي قَصَمَتْ ظَهرَ البَعِير, وأفْقَدَها صَوابَها, فتُرَى مَاذا حَدَث؟
