جرى المؤرخون على أن يربطوا التاريخ القبطى بالمسيحية وهذا يعنى أنهم لم يروا فيه إلا الناحية الدينية وهى ناحية قد أثرت بلا شك على الكثير من نواحي التفكير المصرى، ولكن الواقع أن العصر القبطى هو عصر أهم خصائصه ظهور الشعب المصرى على صفحة التاريخ بعد أن انقضى عصر الحكام الوطنيين، فضلا عن أنه لم ينته بدخول العرب مصر فى القرن السابع الميلادى، بل امتد فى بعض النواحى إلى ما بعد هذا القرن.
