ويتناول موضوع البحث التغيرات الكمية والنوعية التي طرأت علي خريطة استخدامات الأرض بأحياء المدينة المنورة اعتماداً علي تحليل الصورة الفضائية للمدينة لأعوام 1990م، 2000م، 2004م، 2012م، بهدف التعرف على أهم الأوضاع الراهنة لتوزيع تلك الاستخدامات علي مستوي الأحياء في ضوء تزايد حركة النمو العمراني للمدينة، ومن ثم يمكن قراءة وتحليل الهيكل العام لاستخدامات الأرض بها، والذي يمكننا في النهاية من تقييم الوضع الراهن من خلال قياس مدى كفاءة الاستخدامات الحالية للقيام بوظائفها وأدوارها الحضرية، فضلاً عن الأدوار والوظائف الإقليمية والدولية الأخرى المرتبطة بتدفقات الحجاج والمعتمرين والزائرين، والتي تشكل مكوناً عضوياً في الوظائف الحضرية سواء على مستوى المدينة المنورة، من حيث توصيف عناصرها المختلفة وخصوصية حالة بعض نوعياتها، وكذلك عرض لمساحاتها وتوزيعها الكمي ودرجة توازنها وتقييم كفاءة كل منها، ودراسة التوزيع المكاني لها، وعلاقة هذا التوزيع بخصائص الموضع والموقع.
