كان هناك أسد قد بلغ أيامه الأخيرة، فتمدد مريضاً مشرفاً على الموت عند مدخل كهفه يلفظ أنفاسه الأخيرة. اجتمعت حوله رعاياه من الحيوانات واقتربت منه بينما هو لا حول له ولا قوة. وعندما وجودوا أنه على وشك الموت قالوا لأنفسهم: "هذا هو وقت تصفية الضغائن". اقترب منه الخنزير البري وضربه بنابه؛ ثم جرحه الثور بقرنه؛ والأسد مازال مستلقياً عاجزاً أمامهم؛ مما جعل الحمار يشعر بالأمان فاقترب من الأسد رافعاً ذيله نحوه وضربه بحوافره على وجهه. "هذا موت مضاعف"، زمجر الأسد. فقط الجبناء يهينون سلطاناً يحتضر.
