وبعد، فقد اخترت هؤلاء الثمانية من كبار شعراء العراق على إمتداد القرن العشرين، الكلاسيكيين منهم والحداثيين، لأنني أعرف ستة منهم معرفة شخصية منذ مطالع شبابي عندما كنت أقيم في العراق في أواخر أربعينات القرن الماضي لمتابعة دراستي في معاهده، ثمّ في زيارات متكررة له بعد عودتي منه في عام ١٩٤٩، فقد مكّنتني تلك الظروف من معرفة هؤلاء الشعراء الستة ومعرفتي الدقيقة بشعرهم وبسيرهم.
