يبحث هذا الكتاب في التغيرات التي طرأت على القيم الاجتماعية في مصر بعد تطبيق سياسة الانفتاح الاقتصادي في السبعينيات. فقد ساهمت سياسة الانفتاح في تبعية مصر للسوق الرأسمالي العالمي وتحول الاقتصاد المصري إلى اقتصاد يقوم على الاستثمارات والقروض الأجنبية بدلًا من المدخرات الوطنية وتحل فيه الواردات الأجنبية محل المنتجات الزراعية والصناعية المصرية.
وإلى جانب ذلك برزت قطاعات ذات نمو هش ومرهون للخارج مثل السياحة والبترول وقناة السويس وهيمنت الرأسمالية الطفيلية على المجالات الاقتصادية والسياسية والثقافية مما مكنها من نشر القيم الاستهلاكية بين أفراد المجتمع الذين بدأوا يلهثون وراء تحقيق أكبر قدر من الربح المالي- في أقل فترة ممكنة- بأساليب مشروعة وغير مشروعة وبدون جهد. وأصبح المال هو شرط النجاح في الحياة وسيطرت شهوة الكسب السريع وظمأ التملك وتكيس الثروة وأصبحت العلاقات بين الناس علاقات نقدية قاضية على أي نوع من الصلات الإنسانية ومن ثم انتشرت قيم الفردية والأنانية والانتهازية والسلبية واللامبالاة وكان لانتشار هذه القيم تأثيره على شتى مناحي حياتنا بحيث أصبحت تقف عائقًا ضد أي جهود تنوية.
