في الثمانينات من القرن الماضي، حاول هيكل أن يكتب عن الصحافة المصرية والديمقراطية، ولكنه لم يجد في مصر والبلاد العربية إلا السلطة فكان كتابه "بين الصحافة والسياسة"، ويقول هيكل أنه حاول أن يجد لكتابه عنوانا بديلا خفيفا، وبالفعل اختار عنوان: "الجانب الآخر من القمر" ثم عدل عن ذلك فقد أحس أنه عنوان قصصي، وهو ليس من مدرسة تحويل السياسة إلى قصص، والقصص إلى سياسة، ولأني من مدرسة تحويل السياسة إلى قصص، والقصص إلى سياسة؛ فقد استعرت عنوان هيكل.. المعدول عنه والمهجور، ولم أتركه نسيا منسيا.
