الكتاب هنا ليس محاولة قراءة دوستويفسكي، بل هي جملة وصول، المطاف عند نص ليون شيستوف، الفلسفي، هذا، الذي كتبه في العام 1922. وإذا كان المترجم يشير إلى سنة الكتابة، فلكي يؤكد على المرحلة التي جاء فيها هذا النص. إذ بعد الثورة البلشفية، غادر شيستوف روسيا، ليقيم فترة قصيرة في سويسرا، قبل أن يستقر في العام 1921، في فرنسا التي بقي فيها إلى تاريخ وفاته العام 1938. ففي هذه المرحلة الأخيرة من عمره، أي المرحلة الفرنسية، تطور فكر شيستوف، بالأحرى انتقل ممّا كان يسميه "فلسفة التراجيديا" (كما جاءت أعماله عن نيتشه وشكسبير ودوستويفسكي وغيرهم) إلى نقده القوي والعميق للعقلانية والبديهيات المتعارف عليها، وبالتالي، نقده للعلم والمنطق – اللذين يجد أنهما دمرا الحسّ الإنساني – في سبيل العودة، إلى روحانية ما، قد تكون دينية، وفق البعض، لكن في العمق، هي هذه الوجودية التي اكتشفها عند كيركغارد، الفيلسوف الدانماركي. لذلك علينا أن نقرأ نص شيستوف حول دوستويفسكي الذي يعيد قراءته بمفهوم آخر، ليُظهر كم أن الكاتب الروسي، كان متقدما في طرح الأسئلة الوجودية المضادة للبديهيات العقلانية. وبالتالي، يفتح شيستوف طريقا متفردا في استنطاق صاحب رائعة "الإخوة كرامازف"، ليشير إلى "حياة أخرى"، ربما حاول منطق ذاك العصر أن يتناساها، أو بالأحرى أن يدفع بها إلى "خارج خشبة المسرح
