بهذه الأبيات من بوشكين، وبمقطع من انجيل لوقا عن الشياطين التي دخلت في الخنازير يفتتح دوستويفسكي روايته التي يعطيها عنوان "الشياطين".
أما الشياطين فهم أولئك الذين يتصارعون على روسيا وليس من أجلها.
في العام 1871 نشر دوستويفسكي الجزء الأول من روايته هذه، وتلك المرحلة كانت مرحلة الانقسامات والأفكار المتصارعة، حيث تنمو أفكار الاشتراكية، والأفكار التي تدعو إلى التحرّر من سلطة الكنيسة، وحيث سلطة الدولة تبدو أضعف، وروسيا ترى نفسها أقل من ألمانيا وبقية أوروبا.
عبر نماذج يختارها دوستويفسكي بعناية، من المجتمع الروسي، وهي نماذج لشخصيات حقيقية في جزء كبير منها ، يقدّم لنا صورة عن المجتمع الروسي في تلك الأيام، وعن النقاشات الواسعة التي كانت تدور حول الأفكار الجديدة، وحول رغبة رؤية روسيا في مصاف الدول الأكثر تحضّراً، وحول حياة الشعب الروسي. وتشكّل المناقشات حول القضايا الأدبية وحول الدين والايمان، وحول الخير والشرّ، والارستقراطية، والديمقراطية، وحرية التفكير، والصراع بين العلم والدين... الخلفية التي يبني عليها دوستويفسكي نماذج شخصياته.
