صنفت رواية"الأبله" من قبل النقاد ومؤرخي الرواية بأنها رواية فلسفية. لكنها تلك الفلسفة التي تتم قراءتها على عدة مستويات فيستوعب دواخلها الجميع وتمتعهم وتترك فيهم العظة والعبرة والدرس المستفاد على اختلافهم. أما الكاتب والفيلسوف البريطاني أنتوني جرايلنج فقد وصف رواية"الأبله" بأنها"بدون سؤال، أحد أعظم الكتب التي كتبت".
