لا أدرى إن كان هناك من تناول ديستويفسكى بهذا العمق كما تناوله نيقولا برديائف. إن برديائف بروحه الجدلية المضطرمة يكاد يكون ديستويفسكيا تماما، ديستويفسكى نفسه، ولكن بوعى فلسفى أكبر. والكتاب فيه ربكة جدلية تميز كليهما، والفكرة الرئيسية فيه هى "حرية الروح". والمعضلة التى تتناولها روايات ديستويفسكى، فى رأى برديائف، هى الصراع بين حرية الروح، التى تجلب الاختيار، وبالتالى تحتوى على بذور شر، وبين التنظيم القسرى لسعادة بشرية تقوم على معاملة الناس كالقطيع. وهى المشكلة التى بلغ التعبير عنها ذروته فى أسطورة المفتش الاكبر فى الإخوة كارامازوف. ففى هذيانات "إيفان" ظهر رجل هو ضد للمسيح، وهو رجل له روح محبة للبشر، وله رسالة روحية تشبه رسالة المسيح، ولكنه يرى أن المسيح حمّل الناس آلاما أكبر منهم، ودافعه فى رسالته كان الغرور، لقد نمى غرور الروح البشرية للنخبة، وفى المقابل ترك ملايين البشر للشر. أما رسالته – المفتش الاكبر – فهى أن يقسم البشر لنخبة تمثل العشر، والتسعة أعشار المتبقية يُعاملوا كالقطيع ويُوزع الخبر عليهم بمساواة، وبذلك تتحقق "السعادة الاجتماعية المنظمة"
