"معتصم" مثله مثل ملايين الشباب الذين فقدوا يقينهم في الحياة، هم ضحايا التربية السيئة في البيت والمدرسة والجامع، ﻻ ذنب لهم إلا أنهم جاؤوا في زمن اهتزت فيه الثوابت وندرت فيه القيم.
تدور أحداث الرواية حول "معتصم"، شاب في مقتبل العمر، دفعته ظروفه الأسرية إلى الاعتصام في رابعة مع ابن عمه وصديقه، فر من رابعة قبل فض الاعتصام ومات ابن عمه في صباح يوم الفض برصاص المعتصمين من داخل جامع رابعة. تبدلت حياته من نقيض إلى نقيض بعد موت ابن عمه، وفقد هويته، وشك في وجود الله، واتجه إلى اﻹلحاد، وعاش حياة مليئة باللهو والعبث بعد أن ترك أسرته. ثم أحاطت به المخاطر والصعاب من كل جانب، ومات أبيه، وظلمه أخوته، وسجن دون ذنب، وتخلى عنه أخوته وأقرب الناس لدية، ثم خرج من السجن عاجزا جسديا ليس له مأوى. وساق له الله بعض الشواهد التي تدل على وجوده ، ووجد في النهاية ما يخلصه من المعاناة والعذاب.
