تدور أحداث رواية "ألوان الزئبق" حول فضائح عائلة السكري، التي يكشفها أحد أبنائها بأسلوب مثير وماكر. وتُظهر الرواية كيف يُخفي الإنسان أسراره الدفينة، وكيف يفضحها الآخرون، وكيف يعيش بوجهين: وجه البر والتقوى في العلن، ووجه العربدة والفجور في السر. لكنّ المستور ينكشف فجأة، وتتلاحق أحداثه ووقائعه اللاهثة، التي خرجت عن سيطرة الجميع. وستزيح الحقيقة سياج الصمت الذي احترفت العائلة بناءه منذ أيام جدهم الأكبر، لينقضّ البناء فوق رؤوسهم جميعًا. الرواية ذاخرة بالإحداث الفضائحية المثيرة، بتفاصيلها الإنسانية المغرقة، وأحداثها الواقعية التي ترمز إلى ما هو أعمق بكثير.
