يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى وصف الأصوات الإنجليزية وشرح بعض الأحكام الصوتية الأخرى المتعلقة بدراسة هذه الأصوات. وتأتي الدراسة في أربعة فصول موجزة، يتناول الفصل الأول المبادئ الأساسية لعلم الأصوات، ويتناول كل من الفصل الثاني والثالث الأصوات الساكنة والمتحركة مدعمة بأمثلة منطوقة ورسومات توضيحية لكيفية النطق. ويشرح الفصل الرابع بعض الأحكام الصوتية المتعلقة بالمقطع، والنبر، وأحكام أخري لنطق النهايات الصرفية. وألحق بالكتاب قرصا مضغوطا جمع كل الأمثلة التي جاءت بالكتاب بهدف الاستماع إليها والتدرب على نطقها.
ولقد حاولت شرح هذه الأصوات والمفاهيم المرتبطة بها للدارس العربي لما لاقيته من قصور في استيعاب الكثير من الدارسين لجوانب شفهية كثيرة نظرا لاهتمام النظم التعليمية باللغة الإنجليزية المكتوبة وقواعدها على حساب اللغة المنطوقة. وكان كل اهتمامي مركزا في تبسيط المفاهيم وتوضيحها في إيجاز حتى يتمكن الدارس من الاستفادة التامة نطقا واستماعا. والهدف المرجو من وراء ذلك أن يتحدث الدارس العربي بلغة إنجليزية مفهومة وأن يكون قادرا على الاستماع والفهم ليتحقق التواصل في عالم يتخذ من التواصل الناجح أساسا لحياة أفضل
