بحق يعتبر هذا الكتاب للشيخ عبد الواحد يحيى (1886-1951) من أهم وأنفس المراجع في علم مقارنة الأديان والتراثيات الروحية من خلال الفحص العميق لرموزها المشتركة، وهو أيضاً مدخل ممتاز لجملة من المفاهيم الأساسية المتعلقة بالتربية الروحية والعرفانية التي تشترك في جوهرها الواحد وفي هدفها الواحد كل المدارس التربوية الأصيلة حتى إن اختلفت كيفيات التعبير عنه وتنوعت مسالك البلوغ إليه، ويتألف الكتاب من 75 مقالة نشرها الشيخ عبد الواحد ما بين 1925 و1950 في مجلتين كانتا تصدران في فرنسا. وفي كلّ مقالة بيان لدلالات رمز معين تشترك فيه العديد من الملل والديانات والمذاهب التراثية الموصولة بالوحي الإلهي. كرمز الكهف ورمز الجبل ورمز الشجرة ورموز القلب والسلّم والمركز وسيف الإسلام والسبحة، وغير ذلك من المفاهيم المتعلقة بالفن المعماري المقدس، والبروج الفلكية والهيئة الكونية، والدلالات العرفانية للأعداد والحروف كحرف (نون) وحرف (قاف). وفي ثنايا هذه المقالات والتهميشات التابعة لها توجد توضيحات هامة جداً للكثير من المصطلحات والإشارات الرمزية الخاصة بالميدان الميتافيزيقي. وعلى العكس من الأطروحات المعاصرة، يبيّن الشيخ أن الرموز ليست مجرد مصطلاحات وضعية، وإنّما هي نماذج ومثل لحقائق تفتح آفاق الوعي اليقظ على الآفاق المقدسة للمراتب العلوية لأنها بارزة من حضرة الغيب العلوي.
وفي آخر هذه المقالات أو تفي التهميشات يجد لقارئ العديد من تعقيبات للمعرب حرص فيها على بيان التوافق التام بين ما يبينه المؤلف من حقائق وبين التعاليم الإسلامية المؤصلة في القرآن العظيم والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة وكلام العارفين وبالأخص كلام شيخ الصوفية الأكبر محيي الدين محمد ابن العربي.
