علاقة العمل تقوم فعلياً على عدم التكافؤ الواقعي بين رب العمل القوي إقتصادياً والعامل الضعيف إقتصادياً؛ والأجير، عند قيامه بالأعمال الموكولة غليه في عقد الإستخدام، يتعرض لأخطار شتّى، إقتصادية (غلاء المعيشة، ضعف القدرة الشرائية للنقد الوطني ...) وإجتماعية (مرض، شيخوخة ...)، وغالباً ما يكون الأجر الذي يحصل عليه مقابل ما يؤدي من عمل مصدر دخله الأساسي أو الوحيد في بعض الأحيان. فتأتي تشريعات العمل لرفع الظلم والبؤس عن الطبقة العاملة وانتشالها من حالة الفقرة والعوز وتوفير حد مقبول من الأمن المعيشي يليق بكرامة العامل الإنسانية، عن طريق تحقيق التوازن بين أجور العمال وحاجاتهم المعيشية وتحسين مستوى التأمينات الإجتماعية. وهذا ما يؤدي إلى تحرير العمال من الخوف والتوجّس من الغد ويساهم في تحقيق الأمن الداخلي في المجتمع.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة القواعد القانونية الخاصة بالأجر في قانون العمل في التشريعين اللبناني والفرنسي، والتعمّق في مدلولها الإجتماعي وبعدها الإقتصادي، وتلمّس خصوصية قانون العمل لجهة طبيعة أحكامه الآمرة وصياغتها المتقلة عن قواعد بقية فروع القانون، والوقوف على مدى تكيّف هذا القانون مع المتغيّرات الحاصلة في المجتمعات وفي ظل ثورة المعلوماتية والإتصالات التي عرفها العالم في الربع قرن الأخير.
