تعد الخلاصة الألفية المعروفة باسم "ألفية ابن مالك" والتي وضعها أبو عبد الله جمال الدين محمد بن عبد الله بن مالك (600هـ-672هـ) من أهم ما كتب في ميدان النحو، و لهذا، أقبل عليها اللغويون يشرحونها ويضعون عليها الحواشي، وقد بلغت شروحها وشروح شروحها والذيول والحواشي عليها العشرات، لكن اشهر شروحها وأفضلها شرح ابن عقيل الذي بين أيدينا والذي لاقى بدوره، اهتماماً كبيراً من قبل العلماء، فأقبلوا يضعون عليه الحواشي والشروح.
ولهذه الشروح طبعات كثيرة تعد بالعشرات، وهي تختلف فيما بينها بالنسبة إلى مقدماتها والتعاليق عليها وشروح شواهدها وفهارسها. والطبعة التي بين أيدينا من شرح ابن عقيل تتميز بأنها قد جاء واسطاً بالنسبة للأمور السابقة الذكر وهي تميز بالحواشي التي جاءت على النص، و بالتخاريج المتعددة وبالفهارس المثبتة في ذيل الطبعة والتي غطت الشواهد الشعرية والمصادر والمراجع وفهرس للمواضيع.
