لقد نالت ألفية ابن مالك من الشهرة ما لم تنله أيُّ ألفية أخرى أو أيُّ كتاب نحوي آخر، فقد بلغت شروحها وشروح شروحها والذيول والحواشي عليها العشرات، وطُبعت طبعاتٍ يصعب إحصاؤها. ومن بين الشروح لهذه الألفية «شرح ابن عقيل» الذي لاقى هو أيضاً اهتماماً كبيراً من قبل العلماء فأقبلوا عليه يدرسونه ويضعون عليه الحواشي. ويمتاز هذا الشرح بالتوسُّط بين الإيجاز والإطناب، أحسن فيه ابن عقيل عرض المسائل النحوية، واختصارها. واعتنى فيه بمسائل النحو أكثر من اعتنائه بمسائل الصرف لغناء مسائل الأول وشواهده. وأكثر فيه من الاستشهاد بالأبيات الشعرية حتى بلغت ثلاثمئة وتسعاً وخمسين شاهداً، كما استشهد بالآيات والأحاديث النبوية.لغ
