تدور أحداث الرواية حول عبد المنعم الصحافي الحديث العهد بالمهنة، الذي يوكل إليه القيام بدراسة عن التعايش بين الطوائف في القرية اللبنانية، فلا يجد أفضل من بلدة صديقه الياس، المتعددة الطوائف، للبدء بتلك المهمة. لكنه يفاجأ غداة وصوله إليها بنعيه الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر وبدعوة إلى مسيرة مشتركة وإقامة مأتم شعبي، فيضطر إلى تأجيل تحقيقاته ويبقى في البلدة للمشاركة إلى جنب صديقه الياس. من البداية تتلاحق الوقائع كسلسلة من المواقف المتشنجة: ضغوطات، ورضوخات، واختلافات، بحيث يتبين للصحافي الناشئ في النهاية أن المسيرة مسايرة والتعايش المزعوم تمثيل ليس إلا. لكنه في نفس الوقت يكتشف قصة تعايش حقيقية. شاب وفتاة من طائفتين مختلفتين لا يمثلان تمثيلاً، وإنما يعيشان التعايش بالفعل، سائرين في قلب تلك المسيرة المشتركة، متسترين بحبهما، ولا يعرف بأمرهما سوى حسونة الفتى الشريد الذي يدّعي أنه يمتلك أسرار البلدة.
