هذا الكتاب الممتع للأديب الفريد أبي منصور الثعالبي يضم العديد من الأمثال التي تخص الإسلامي والجاهلي والعربي والعجمي، الملوكي والسوقي، والخاص والعام، ويضم نشر ما يجري مجراها من ألفاظهم، ويتضمن ما يأخذ مأخذها من فرائد النثر، وقلائد النظم،وفوائد الجد، ونوادر الهزل، فيوجد فيه ما يتمثل به من القرآن والتوراة والإنجيل والزبور، وجوامع كلم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكلام الأنبياء عليهم السلام، وكلام الصحابة والتابعين رضي الله عنهم، وعيون أمثال العرب والعجم، وما يناسبها وما يشاكلها من نتف الخلفاء، وفقر الملوك والوزراء، ونكت الزهاد والحكماء، ولمع المحدثين والفقهاء، وحكم الفلاسفة والأطباء، وغرر البلفاء.
والكتاب مقسم إلى أربعة فصول، الفصل الأول: في المدخل والأنموذج، والفصل الثاني في سياقة ما يجري مجرى الأمثال من الأقوال الصادرة عن طبقات الناس وذوي المراتب المتباينة، والفصل الثالث فيما يكثر التمثل به من جميع الأشياء، والفصل الرابع في سائر الفنون والأغراض وهو مفصل أيضًا إلى أربعة فصول، الأول منه في ذكر أحوا الإنسان وأطواره المختلفة، والثاني في المحاسن والمكارم والأخلاق، والثالث في ذكر المقابح والمساوئ والرابع في فنون مختلفة الترتيب.
