عبد الباقي يونس المحتجز من قبل إحدى الميليشيات في بيت كاهن رعية يطل على مقبرة يروي الوقائع التي شهدها أثناء احتجازه وتلك التي حصلت بين قريته والقرية المجاورة التي يعلّم فيها والتي منها اختار رفيقة حياته.
القريتان متنافرتان منذ أجيال، وعلاقة الواحدة بالأخرى قائمة على الريبة والجفاء. وتأتي الحرب الأهلية لتسعر المظان ولتوسع الشقة. فيكفي أن يعثر على جثة أحد الشبان عند حافة الطريق التي تربط القريتين ببعضهما حتى يوجه أصبع الاتهام إلى القرية الأخرى وتقع الوقيعة.
في الجو المشحون بالعداء يتولد شيء من التعاطف والتآخي بين رجل الدين وبين المعلم العلماني الذي ليس من دينه، وتنمو المشاعر بسرعة الأحداث الجارية بحيث تصبح حياة كل منهما مهددة بالخطر.
