"يعلمنا التاريخ أن الدول إنما تنشأ على أثر الحروب والثورات أو من جراء الانشقاقات... أما المتعهدية الثانية فلم تعرف هذا المصر أو ذاك، فلم تمر بمرحلة من المراحل السابقة، وقيامها جاء نتيجة نزوة رفض واعتناق موقف. وما أعتنيه بالثانية في نعت الخندق إنما هو تمييز تاريخي بين عهدين: عهد ما قبل الجسر وعهد ما بعده، وهو ما تعبّر عنه الناس عامة بقولها: بعد العبارتين... ذات يوم رفض الخندقيون بقاطعيهم وعائلاتهم السبع عهد العبارتين ووقفوا وقفة رجل واحد مطالبين بإقامة جسر..."
في هذا الكتاب يؤرخ "حبيب جاويش" للأحوال الثابتة والمتغيرة في أضيعة الخندق، وللحميّة التي عمت الخواطر في ظروف زمنية معينة، وللمنازعات والمهادنات التي جرت بين أهاليها في القاطعين وفي خراجها ابتداءً من حزيران 1922. كما لم يتردد عن ذكر ما كان يمكن أن يحدث في الظروف الطارئة لدى هبوب رياح التنافر والتفرقة بين أبناء القرية الواحدة ذات الطوائف المتعددة. والراوي يدون أخباره ووقائعه ومصدره في كل ذلك أقوال الأهالي وأخبارهم. وهدفه في كل ما دون هو التعريف بهذه الضيعة الشمّاء وبأخبارها، وبرجالاتها الراحلين وأفعالهم وصنائعهم.
في "أخبار المتعهدية الثانية" نتعرف إلى قرية تبحث عن صيغة للتعايش. القرية تدعى الخندق، وهي واقعة بالفعل على حافتي هوّة طبيعية تفصلها إلى قاطعين. وبسبب بنيتها الجغرافية وتركيبتها الطائفية التي تتقاطع هي أيضاً عند حافتي الهوّة، يرى قاطنوها أن بناء جسر يربط القاطعين هو الوسيلة الفضلى لإزالة العائق الطبيعي ولتجاوز الاختلاف البشري في سبيل تحقيق التعايش المنشود.
