في هذا الكتاب يختار "جان شرف" موضوع "الإيديولوجيا المجتمعية" كمدخل إلى تاريخ لبنان الإجنماعي في محاولة لتحديد التأريخ اللبناني على أسس المنهج العلمي وشروط المعرفة التاريخية، وهو في إختياره لهذا المنهج ... يلتقط ظاهرة الإستمرارية في بعدها التاريخي ليقف على أسباب نشوئها، وعلى الذهبية التي احتضنتها في الزمن الطويل.
يهدف الكتاب إلى غاية مزدوجة سعى إليها وهي: إولاً: -الإسهام المتواضع في تحديد التأريخ اللبناني على قواعد منهجية تطبيقية، تحرر البحث من الإلتزامات الإيديولوجية والإنفعالات الظرفية، وتعيد غلى المنهج العلمي مهمته الأساسية في طرح موضوع حقيقة الماضي والتقرب منها بقدر المستطاع: -وثانياً: محاولة إستيعاب الماضي على حقيقته، بغية فهم أدق للحاضر، وإدراك البعد المستقبلي للواقع اللبناني بروية عقلانية.
