مما لا شك فيه أن الأديان المسيحية أسهمت إسهاماً بارزاً في تاريخ لبنان الإجتماعي والإقتصادي، ومن حياة المؤمنين وخصوصاً في الأرياف.
وهذا الكتاب دراسة ديمغرافية اعتمدت على كل ما توفر للكاتب من محفوظات الأدبار من وئائق ودفاتر اليوميات والحسابات ومن بيانات لدراسة سيرة الدير كمؤسسة ريفية عكست الكثير من حياة الريفيين ومعاناتهم مع الطبيعة والسياسة، ذلك أن انتشارا الأديار تاريخياً، في مناطق مختلفة من الجبل، له دوره في تاريخ لبنان وفي التحولات في مجتمع الريف واتجاهاته... وعلى هذا يقول الكاتب "...كان مردود هذا التحول كبيراً على الدير وخطيراً على الريف، لا بل إن هذا التحول مر بمراحل ربطت "إقليمية" الدير بالمدى الإقتصادي في المدينة وامتداداتها التجارية، وقد فرضت على الريف تكييف اقتصاده وتطوير نمط عيشه بالإنتقال من الإكتفاء الذاتي إلى إقتصاد السوق، فضلاً عن تنوع السلع التي حملها التبادل التجاري وكادت تجعل من الريف مجتمعاً إستهلاكياً في ظروف اقتصادية صعبة فشكَل هذا الإتجاه المدخل إلى أزمة استغلها رأسمال المدينة بارتداده على الريف (...) فسيرة الدير منذ تأسيسه وعبر التحولات التي مر بها، كانت ظتهرة تراكمية وسط بيئة قاسية ناضل فيها الريفيون ضد الطبيعة ومؤثرات المدينة. والرهبان بحكم مصادرهم، هم من الريفيين الذين ارتبطوا بالأرض في حياة رهبانية اتسمت بالتنظيم وتوزيع العمل في إطار مؤسسة ريفية جمعت بين التقشف والإنفتاح...". وما حفظه دير مار مارون عنايا من وثائق ودفاتر وسجلات يبين وبكثير من التفصيل عوامل تلك التحولات التي يتحدث عنها الكاتب في مجتمع الريف ولتحديد اتجاهاتها وضبطها يبدأ الكاتب في سيرة الدير منذ تأسيسه حتى العام 1950. حيث تشكل سيرة دير مار مارون عنايا بنظر الكاتب "حالة مناطقية وعاملاً تراكيماً أحدثا من التحولات ما غيَر في تركيبة جرد جبيل الديمغرافية وأدخلها في سيرة العمران والقداسة مع شربل مخلوف بقاعكفرا".
محطات الكتاب: (1) نشأة الدير 1795- 1838، (2) تجديد الدير والأزمات 1838- 1877، (3) السعي لإنماء الدير، (4) الدير وتجاوز الأزمة العالمية 1901- 1927، (5) ضائقة وأمل 1828- 1950. وأخيراً عنايا من الدير إلى المزار.
