لقد أراد الدكتور "جان شرف"، من خلال كتابه هذا، إرساء التوجّه المنهجيّ الذي يستند إلى الأصول في مقاربته لكتابة التاريخ، دون أيّ إسترجاع إيديولوجيّ للماضي، أو إستقراء له من خلال معاناة الحاضر أو تطلعات المستقبل.
هكذا، رأى المؤلف أنه لا يمكن تخطّي التقليد السائد إزاء تاريخ جبل لبنان إلا من خلال التقميش والتفتيش عن أصول وضعيّة جديدة تسمح بمقارنة الأصول وتحليل المراجع المعروفة من جهة، وتمكّن الباحث بالتالي من قراءة حقيقة الماضي من زاوية علميّة بحت.
لهذا، إختار المؤلف دراسة المعطيات الديمغرافية والإقتصادية التي تؤمّنها المحفوظات العثمانية ليعيد كتابة تاريخ جبل لبنان ومحيطه في القرن السادس عشر، فكانت مقاربته منطلقاً للتعرف إلى قرى جبل لبنان ومزارعه، وهوية سكانه ومراحل تموضعهم الديمغرافي، كما التطوّر الإقتصادي وإنعكاساته على إنتاج الفلاح اللبناني، فضلاً عن تنوّع الملكيات الخاصّة والعامّة، والتوزّع الضريبي.
استغرق هذا العمل أكثر من خمس سنوات، عايش خلالها المؤلف بيانات الدفاتر العثمانية وتآلف وخطوطها وفكّ لغز مضامينها، فحددّ مواقع قرىّ، واكتشف مزارع دراسةً، وحلّل مئات الأرقام المحتسبة حاصل مال، أو ديموس، أو قشلاق، أو دوره، أو بادهوا، أو باج بازار، أو أيّ ضريبة أخرى، كما تمعّن في تمييز إنتاج الحنطة بحساب المكّوك، والزيت بحساب القلّة، والشعير بحساب الرطل.
كثيرة هي المواقع التي استنفدت من وقته الكثير ليحدّدها على خرائط، أرادها منتظمة، أمينة، دقيقة قدر المستطاع.
